About Chick Evans and the Evans Scholars Foundation

Charles ‘Chick’ Evans, founder of the Evans Scholar Foundation was born on 18th July 1890. His family moved to Chicago in the year 1893. Five years after that year, he started caddying (i.e. holding the golf bag) at the Edgewater Golf Club. Because he was introduced quite early to the game, he grew into the nation’s top amateur golfer. He became famous in 1916 when he won both the United States Amateur and U.S. Open.

Later in 1930, he established the Evans Scholars Foundation with the mission to provide college scholarships and full tuition to caddies with limited financial means. Still in 1930, the first two Evans Scholars enrolled at Northwestern University and from that time till now, the Foundation has recorded over 11,815 exceptional young women and men who have graduated as Evans Scholars. As of this year, over 1,100 Evans Scholars have enrolled at twenty-four (24) leading universities across the nation.

About Chick Evans Scholarship

The Chick Evans Scholarship is a fully-funded scholarship that covers the recipient’s tuition, and housing college in an Evans Scholarship House, except at the University of Notre Dame and Penn State University.

The organization seeks out low-income, high-performing students who will be recipients of their scholarships. The potential beneficiaries should have exceptional character and must demonstrate financial need.

The applicants should be caddies who have served at a member club of the Western Golf Association for a minimum of two (2) years and the successful recipients, the scholarship will be renewable up to four (4) years.

Evans Scholarship Foundation is the primary sponsor of this scholarship and was established by Charles ‘Chick’ Evans – a famous amateur player. The acceptable time to apply is at the beginning of the last year of high school or as a freshman in college. All recipients will participate in social and service activities on campus and will live and work together in the community.

Eligibility Criteria for the Chick Evans Scholarship

The following are the eligibility criteria for the Chick Evans Scholarship:

  1. Must have been a caddy for a minimum of two (2) years and fifty (50) loops as proof of their strong caddie record.
  2. Must have a GPA of 3.0 and above.
  3. Must demonstrate evidential and significant financial need.
  4. Should submit recommendation letters from high school officials and club which attests to your character.
  5. Must be a full-time high school student or an undergraduate student already enrolled in a four-year university or college at the time of application.
  6. The marital status of the student should be single, and the acceptable age range is 17 to 19 years.

  4. Pay the required fee with the Evans Scholars Foundation CSS code – 0153.
  5. Submit your completed application and upload all supporting documents.
  6. Submission of the 2024-25 FAFSA Federal Student Aid Report along with the Student Aid Index (SAI) should be made on or before 15th January.
