About NIMET

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET) was established by a National Assembly Act known as the NIMET (Establishment) ACT 2003, which was passed on May 21 and took effect on June 19 after receiving presidential assent.

It is a federal government agency tasked with providing the federal government with meteorological advice on all matters, projecting, preparing, and interpreting government policy in that area, as well as providing weather (and climate) forecasts for the safe operation of aircraft, ocean-going vessels, and oil rigs.

In accordance with the Act, the Agency is also charged with observing, compiling, gathering, processing, and disseminating all meteorological data and information both internally and externally, coordinating staff research projects, and publishing academic papers in the various branches of meteorology in order to support sustainable socio-economic activities.
