The Abia state chapter of the Nigerian Union of Teachers has made the decision to embark on an indefinite strike over the ill-treatment by the state government.

It has been revealed that Abia State primary school teachers were not only poorly paid but also made to take only part payment of their salaries.

However, following the newly led government, Governor Alex Otti has promised workers to receive their salaries on or before the 28th of every month. He also added by his statement during his inauguration not to discriminate between the core civil servants and workers in parastatals and agencies.

As of the time of writing this article, Abia State workers have been confirmed to have received their previous month salaries and some arrears.

Governor Alex Otti in a statement has directed the Accountant General of the state to start the payment of June salaries to workers.

Abia State workers who were on an indefinite strike following a backlog of salary arrears from the immediate-past Governor Okezie Ikpeazu have been complaining. Doctors in the University Teaching Hospital Aba (ABSUTH) owned 24 months’ salaries while other Health Management Board counterparts were owned 13 months’ salary arrears.

The Abia State Chairmans of the Joint Public Service Negotiating Council, Nigeria Civil Service Union have confirmed that workers in the State had started receiving their salaries.

He also added by commending Governor Otti for keeping to his words and encouraged him not to slacken until all outstanding arrears are cleared.
