Ex-presidents Salary Structure in Nigeria: In Nigeria, all Ex-Presidents and Heads of State, Former Vice Presidents, members of Families of deceased Ex-Presidents, and members of Families of deceased ex Vice-Presidents receive pensions/monthly allowances for their upkeep and payment of domestic workers. Ex-Presidents Salary Structure in Nigeria

In this year’s budgeting, A total of N13,805,814,220 ( about 13.8bn) has been proposed by the President Muhammadu Buhari-led Nigerian government for the disbursement of pensions to former Presidents, Vice-Presidents, Heads of State, Chiefs of General Staff, retired heads of service, permanent secretaries, and also to the retired heads of government agencies and parastatals in the 2024 fiscal year.

The beneficiaries include former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo, and Goodluck Jonathan, Vice-Presidents Atiku Abubakar, and Namadi Sambo. Among others, ex-military Head of State includes General Yakubu Gowon, General Abdusalami Abubakar, former dictator and self-styled military President, General Ibrahim Babangida, and a former Chief of General Staff, Commodore Ebitu Ukiwe (retd.).

The 2023 budget appropriation, which was highlighted by the Federal Ministry of Finance, Budget, and National Planning, has it that a total of N2.3bn would be for “entitlements of former presidents/heads of states and vice-presidents/chief of general staff.”

The analysis has also revealed that a total of N10.5bn would serve as “benefits of retired heads of service and permanent secretaries.” and N1bn would be paid as “severance benefits to retired heads of government agencies and parastatals.”

Meanwhile, governors and their deputies are also entitled to huge pensions when they leave office, and a number of former chief executives of the various states are also expected to be beneficiaries of pensions, which include monthly payments, the purchase of new vehicles, the building of mansions and payment of domestic workers.

 

Other Government Expenditure in 2024

The Federal Government of Nigeria’s annual budget expenditure has increased by about 238.45 percent between 2016 and 2023, according to the analysis of a recent report.

According to the Budget Office of the Federation, the federal government budgeted to spend N6.06tn for the 2016 fiscal year. However, in the recently proposed 2024 budget, the overall expenditure was pegged at N20.51tn, which is thrice the amount budgeted in 2016.

In the 2023 budget, the government’s N17.12tn projected expenditure includes the following:

  • Recurrent expenditure – N6.9tn
  • Capital expenditure – N5.9tn
  • Debt servicing – N3.9tn
  • Statutory transfers amount – N744.11bn
  • Non-debt recurrent costs – N8.27tn
  • Personnel costs – N4.99tn
  • Pensions, gratuities, and retirees’ benefits – N854.8bn; 
  • overheads, N1.11tn; 
  • Capital expenditure, including the capital component of statutory transfers – N5.35tn; 
  • Debt service, N6.31tn; and
  • Sinking fund of N247.73bn 

 

How Much Does An Ex-President Get Paid In Nigeria?

The president receives a taxable pension from the secretary of the Treasury. Former presidents are entitled to an Executive Level I pension, which was N100,904,336.00 in 2020 and will be N104,172,679.00 starting in January 2023. After a president leaves office, the pension becomes effective.

The Nigerian president is paid a base salary of N292,892. If allowances are added to this base pay, the total pay would be N1,171,568 per month or about N14 million annually. There is some entitlement attached to this pension, such as a well-furnished office, free medical treatment, and a five-bedroom apartment in any location of their choice, etc. 

However, the families of deceased former deputies receive N750,000 annually, paying quarterly in the amount of N187,500, while the families of deceased former presidents are each entitled to an annual allowance of N1 million, payable quarterly in the amount of N250,000.
